the third iteration of our leather journal has been meticulously hand cut and sewn from a butter soft full grain washed and barrel tumbled 1.2mm vegetable tanned natural culatta. the leather offers a sporadic fiber structure with an array of textures and scarring which are highlighted throughout the piece.
culatta is a special cut combined of the rear just above the cordovan, the belly middles and the hind shanks, offering a dense structure, tight grain and medium to firm temper.
vegetable tanning is a traditional method of treating the hide using natural extracts such as tree bark, for a truly artisanal finish.
a pigmented wax has been applied to the leather offering an array of grey tonal nuances, which will crack over time revealing the natural leather beneath.
crafted from multiple panels with an open seam construction and hammered flat seams in a tonal 0.65mm hand waxed Japanese linen thread over an 8 hour period without the use of machines. the journal also features a hand forged iron ring closure with a triple stitched leather strap fastening and a writing utensil pocket to the rear cover.
each journal features 80 leather bound hand sewn pages of handmade khadi paper crafted from 100% long fibered cotton rag. each page is 150gsm, acid free, with a medium surface and a deckle edge. the journals are suitable for watercolour and all painting, drawing and writing media.
each piece comes in a hand made leather package.
