the sixth iteration of our leather journal has been meticulously hand cut and sewn from a full grain washed and barrel tumbled 3mm vegetable tanned reverse culatta with an iron dye finish that has brewed in the atelier for 28 months, offering an array of steel grey nuances.
culatta is a special cut combined of the rear just above the cordovan, the belly middles and the hind shanks, offering a dense structure, tight grain and medium to firm temper.
vegetable tanned leather is an ancient artisanal process that hinges on the delicate balance between timing and temperature. like a fine aged whiskey time is key, the careful balance of time allows the natural tannins such as tree bark to infuse, yielding rich colours and unparalleled durability. controlled cooling plays a crucial role in achieving that coveted texture and suppleness you come to expect.
crafted from two panels of leather for the main body, with two large sleeve holders and a transparent leather writing utensil pocket to the interior. each stitch hole has been individually spaced and punched by hand before being hand sewn in a tonal 0.65mm hand waxed Japanese linen thread over an 8 hour period without the use of machines.
a hand forged solid burnt bronze rose head nail forms a secure closure to the front. a matte black ring binder to the interior allows you easily replenish pages when needed.
each journal cover features a complimentary leather bound booklet with hand sewn pages, handmade from 100% long fibered cotton rag. each page is 150gsm, acid free, with a medium surface and a deckle edge. the pages are suitable for watercolour and all painting, drawing and writing media.
each piece comes in a hand made leather package.
