the versatile bag has been hand cut from a butter soft full grain 3.5mm vegetable tanned, washed and tumbled natural horse culatta leather with a visible layer of subdermal cordovan.
culatta is a special cut combined of the rear just above the cordovan, the belly middles and the hind shanks, offering a dense structure, tight grain and medium to firm temper. vegetable tanning is a traditional method of treating the hide using natural extracts such as tree bark, for a truly artisanal finish.
crafted with a single piece pattern construction, the bag is hand sewn with our adaptation of the overlock stitch along the sides in a contrasting 0.65mm hand waxed japanese linen thread over a 40 hour period without the use of machines. the unlined interior features a full length riri zipper pocket with a custom 10 hour slow oxidised .925 sterling silver zipper pull, a large open pocket and three card slots.
a wrap around panel creates two exterior pockets to the front and rear for additional storage. a rear center carry handle is complimented by a large shoulder strap that can be disconnected and reattached via the hand forged iron hooks and threaded through two rear loops to work as backpack straps and adjust the height the bag sits.
hand forged iron hardware forms the front closure and rear strap adjustments for the hand stitched double layer shoulder/backpack strap. the bag is finished off with a riri m6 two way zipper closure adorned with custom iron zipper pulls.
the leather has undergone a unique treatment, consisting of sporadically placed iron shavings that have been mildly dampened to react with the leathers tannins. a liquid rubber has been applied over the top with an acrylic resin layer on top. the iron shavings will continue to turn the leather black slowly over time as they are encased within the rubber.
