matte black culatta leather journal
description
the fourth iteration of our leather journal has been meticulously hand cut and sewn from a butter soft full grain washed and barrel tumbled 1.2mm vegetable tanned culatta with a rotten corpse matte black finish. the leather offers a sporadic fiber structure with an array of textures and scarring which are highlighted throughout the piece.
culatta is a special cut combined of the rear just above the cordovan, the belly middles and the hind shanks, offering a dense structure, tight grain and medium to firm temper.
vegetable tanning is a traditional method of treating the hide using natural extracts such as tree bark, for a truly artisanal finish.
crafted from two panels in a tonal 0.65mm hand waxed Japanese linen thread over a 6 hour period without the use of machines. the journal features a hand forged iron nail closure, a small pocket to the interior at the front and a writing utensil pocket to the rear cover.
each journal features 80 leather bound hand sewn pages of handmade khadi paper crafted from 100% long fibered cotton rag. each page is 150gsm, acid free, with a medium surface and a deckle edge. the journals are suitable for watercolour and all painting, drawing and writing media.
